Tips to minimize the impact of spam (unwanted e-mail messages):

  • Don't open spam. Many pieces of spam contain HTML code which will open a connection to a web server operated by the spammers. When you connect, you have verified that you opened the message. This tells the spammers that they have a good e-mail address, which results in them sending you even more spam! So delete spam without opening it!
  • Don't use your e-mail program's preview pane. If you even preview a piece of spam, that's the same as viewing it.
  • Keep your address book up to date, and use your mail filters to "white list" entries in your address book. (A "white list" is a list of specifically allowed entities. A "black list" is a list of specifically disallowed entities.)
  • Use an Anti-Spam service (like the one offered by DigiLink). Such services can scan incoming messages for teltale signs that a message is spam, and then mark it as such. Then you can use mail filtering rules to delete or move the spam so it doesn't clog your inbox.
  • Avoid posting your e-mail address on the web whenever possible. There is even JavaScript code you can use when you must display an e-mail address that scrambles it in the code so web surfing spiders can't pick up your e-mail address.
